Florida Mold Professionals Now Need a License

Florida Mold Professionals Now Need a License
Fort Myers News-Press (07/12/10) Hogan, Dick

A new Florida law effective in July requires individuals who test for mold or perform remediation work to be licensed by the state Department of Business and Professional Regulation. By March 1, existing mold inspectors and remediators must show three years of experience in the field, or meet certain education requirements and pass an exam. Assessors must complete 60 hours of education, and remediators must complete 30 hours. New remediators must hold a two-year degree in a related field and have at least four years of experience or have a high school diploma and four years of documented experience, as well as pass an exam and a criminal background check. New assessors must hold a two-year degree and have one year of experience or have a high school diploma and four years of experience, plus pass the exam and background check. To avoid conflicts of interest, licensed mold specialists cannot conduct a mold assessment and then take on the cleanup project. Dan Reid of Fort Myers-based Intuitive Environmental Solutions says, "It's going to take out a lot of people who in my opinion should not be doing it. They took the four- or eight-hour course and they are now 'certified.'"
