Experts: Bleach Not Best at Killing Flood Mold

Experts: Bleach Not Best at Killing Flood Mold
WSMV-TV (Nashville) (05/13/10)

Disaster clean-up and restoration experts say bleach is not effective at hindering mold growth in homes with water damage, mainly because it is comprised primarily of water, which helps mold and bacteria thrive. John Hill of The Cleaner Depot in Nashville says hospital-strength disinfectants -- particularly Sporicidin, Benefect, and Microban -- are used by professionals. These products are registered with the Environmental Protection Agency as a disinfectant to combat mold, but bleach is not registered as such. Hill says 500 square feet to 1,000 square feet of space can be disinfected with just one gallon of these products, which cost about $30 to $40.
