A "preliminary" protocol from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development lists criteria for houses built between 2001 and 2008 to determine whether defective drywall is present. The protocol acknowledges that houses built as far back as 2001 may be affected by the imported tainted drywall and requires homeowners in some instances to provide reports indicating levels of strontium, elemental sulfur, and other chemical compounds in order for the residence to be deemed contaminated. However, the protocol states that "additional guidance is still needed to clarify qualifications for inspectors and test laboratories and to describe methods for making the measurements in the criteria." In response to the release of the protocol, U.S. Sen. George LeMieux (R-Fla.) says he will urge HUD's secretary to request federal funds for drywall victims.
