IBHS: Top Six Ways to Hurricane-Proof Buildings
IBHS: Top Six Ways to Hurricane-Proof Buildings
National Underwriter (Property & Casualty - Risk & Benefits Management Edition) (05/19/10)
There are six things home and building owners can do to hurricane-proof structures and prevent damage, according to the Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS). They should replace shingle roof covers when there is plenty of time for shingles to heat up and seal, and a secondary water barrier and high wind-rated roof cover should be installed at this point. They also should install storm shutters or impact-resistant windows, use roofing cement to secure shingles, and secure soffits to prevent water damage. Additionally, IBHS recommends sealing openings around wires, cables, and pipes; spaces around electrical boxes and circuit breaker panels; and cracks around wall outlets, vents, and wall lights. Finally, they should look around the structure prior to the storm and remove any items that could become airborne and cause damage. Among other things, they could use shredded bark instead of gravel and rock landscaping materials.
