Jury Awards Fla. Couple $2.4 Million in Suit Over Defective Chinese Drywall

On June 18, a six-member jury awarded Armin and Lisa Seifart $2.4 million in damages to cover the costs of renovating their $1.6 million Florida home, which was damaged by defective Chinese drywall. The Seifarts also were awarded damages related to lost enjoyment of their home and for potential lost resale value. Banner Supply was found 55 percent liable for the problem, while Knauf and two other entities were given the remaining responsibility. The case could have legal ramifications for thousands of other lawsuits still pending. Not only has the defective drywall been blamed for noxious fumes, but also it has allegedly caused corrosion of wiring, plumbing, and computers. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recently recommended that homes with the defective drywall replace any drywall and wiring, fire alarm systems, and gas pipes. The tainted drywall has been found in homes throughout Florida, Virginia, Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana. A federal judge in April awarded seven families in Virginia $2.6 million in damage for defective Chinese drywall, but the Chinese firms in question have not responded to the ruling and may never pay the damages.
