"New Green Construction Code Unveiled"

Last month, the International Code Council (ICC) released Public Version 1.0 of the International Green Construction Code (IGCC), a result of collaboration among ICC, the American Institute of Architects, ASTM International, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), the Illuminating Engineers Society (IES), and the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). IGCC is intended to lower energy usage and greenhouse gases, improve indoor air quality, and encourage the use of energy-efficient building components and renewable energy systems in new and existing commercial buildings. The code requires the verification of building system performance and the education of building owners in best energy-efficient practices, and it allows local jurisdictions to customize the code to meet their needs. ANSI/ASHRAE/USGBC/IES Standard 189.1-2009 for the Design of High-Performance Green Buildings, Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings is referenced in IGCC as an alternative jurisdictional compliance option. According to USGBC President and CEO Rick Fedrizzi, "Green building codes and standards working complementary to one another is a critical step towards advancing green building. This collaboration will accelerate the adoption of green building codes and standards developed jointly by ICC, ASHRAE, USGBC, and IES, across the country and around the globe as we work collectively towards transforming building design, construction and operations to green practices."
