OSHA Ups Hexavalent Chromium Employee Notification Requirements

In response to a lawsuit filed by the Public Citizen Health Research Group, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) expanded its exposure notification requirement for Hexavalent Chromium (Cr(VI)). Under a direct final rule effective June 15, 2010, employers must inform workers of all exposure levels, not just those that exceed the permissible exposure limit (PEL). Previously, employers had to notify employees only when levels surpassed the PEL based on the eight-hour time-weighted-average exposure to CR(VI), which they had to calculate for each employee.
