"Stair Cleaning"
Cleanfax (05/10) Vol. 25, No. 5, Cross, Jeff
Carpet cleaning professionals often find stair cleaning to be a challenge, mainly because customers rarely vacuum the stairs and numerous soils are present. Before cleaning, they should pre-vacuum using a handheld vacuum or a turbine-powered handheld vacuum that connects to the truckmount or portable extractor. Next, they should apply a preconditioner with high lubrication and suspension properties and use a handheld brush or electric buffer-type device to agitate the fibers. To rinse, they should use a small hand tool or wand and use slow movements, high head, and flushing to get rid of soils. They should focus on the nose of the stairs and use an absorbent towel to remove excess soils and moisture as necessary. To avoid complaints about a longer drying time for stairs, they should perform numerous dry strokes on the stairs. Finally, they should apply an encapsulant or other anti-soiling agent, concentrating on the nose of the stairs, and use a brush to work it into the fibers.
