A new white paper from Advance titled "How 'Clean' Is Your Green-Floor Cleaning?" looks at the challenge of ensuring floors are clean for appearance and hygiene while minimizing the impact on the environment, building occupants, and cleaning personnel. In the white paper, the Cleaning Industry Research Institute (CIRI) says, "It is imperative that the focus be on 'cleaning green,' that is cleaning first, cleaning for health and hygiene, as well as cleaning in an environmentally preferable manner." Green cleaning often means limiting the use of products containing harmful chemicals, and while most believe that eliminating chemicals altogether is the "greenest" type of cleaning, some facilities have requirements in place to ensure floors are disinfected against bacterial and viral infections. "There are times when decisions are made to go 'green' that can have an impact on the actual cleaning process resulting in a less healthy environment." Experts say floor cleaning programs must be flexible to accommodate the specific needs of schools, healthcare facilities, office buildings, and other facilities. Additionally, green floor cleaning machines should be chosen based on their ability to adjust to soil content.
