Science & Theory Course
Pre-requisite course requirement for CR Certification Candidates & CEC Course Attendees
Date: Monday, June 1 - Tuesday, June 2, 2015
Hours: 8:00 AM ET – 5:00 PM ET
For those preparing for their Certified Restorer certification, the Contents Restoration course is a pre-requisite requirement, but is also excellent training for those who want to learn more about this specialized aspect of restoration. This comprehensive 2-day lecture-based course content is 98% applicable to anything the restoration professional may encounter, dealing with the science of how to restore personal property damaged due to fire, smoke, flood or disaster.
Intermediate to advanced restoration and theory will be covered, plus show-and-tell demonstrations will prepare the more experienced restoration trainee, estimator, or supervisor for evaluating different degrees of damage and selecting methods for safe and effective restoration, be it Contents, furniture, Oriental and specialty rugs or period furniture styles. Content will cover:

- Textiles (upholstery, Oriental Rugs, window coverings)
- Identification and Inspection
- Particles & Residues
- Cleaning & Deodorizing
- Electronic Restoration
- Wood restoring and refinishing
Course Instructor: Art Johnson, CR, WLS, Johnson Training
Art Johnson CR, WLS, is president of Johnson Training, a Canadian-based restoration training company. Formerly the Operations Manager of Canstar Restorations with three locations in the Greater Vancouver and Whistler areas of Canada, he is certified by RIA as a Water Loss Specialist (WLS) and a Certified Restorer (CR). He has proudly served on, and, for a time, chaired the Water Loss Institute, co-chaired the Restoration Council from the spring of 2004 to 2005, and served as the Environmental Chair for the RIA (ASCR). Art is currently Chairperson of RIA’s Certification Committee and the newly formed Canadian Council and sits on the RIA Board of Directors. He was the recipient of the Martin L King Award in 2011.
Course Instructor: Cliff Zlotnik, CR, CMH, WLS
Cliff as an instructor for the Association of Specialists in Cleaning and Restoration, the Mid Atlantic Environmental Hygiene Resource Center and the Institute for Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification and has presented numerous water damage, odor, smoke and fire restoration training programs and schools throughout the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. He has developed training programs for insurance agents and claims adjusters. Cliff pioneered the concept facility based hands-on training. Active in industry service Cliff is a founding member of the Tri-State Specialty Cleaners and Restorers Association whom he represents as a board member of the IICRC and a past president of the Association of Specialists in Cleaning and Restoration. Cliff is honored to be a recipient of ASCR's Golden Quill, Martin King, and Distinguished Service Awards.
2015 RIA Building Science Course
Pre-requisite course requirement for CR & WLS Certification Candidates & CEC Course Attendees
Date: Wednesday, June 3, 2015
Hours: 8:00 AM ET – 5:00 PM ET
This day-long course is a prerequisite for those pursuing their advanced certifications, either for the Certified Restorer (CR) or Water Loss Specialist (WLS), it is also open to those who want to obtain continuing education credit and advance their professional knowledge.
Taught by one of the industry’s most knowledgeable instructors, learning will focus on the effects of water on:
- Steel framing
Attendees will also learn about the interdependent system and how this affects water migration, as well as how buildings “behave” in response to moisture.
Course Instructor: Chris Schumacher
Christopher Schumacher is a Principal of Building Science Corporation and partner of renowned building envelope and moisture expert Joseph "Joe" Lstiburek, PhD., P. Eng. and a protégé of building science expert and Professor at Waterloo University, John Straube, PhD.
He holds undergraduate degrees in both architecture and engineering as well as a master degree in building science from the University of Waterloo. Chris works as a forensic and research engineer and is recognized as an expert in the fields of building monitoring and building materials, systems & enclosure testing. He regularly provides RD&D and applications consulting services to building designers, contractors and manufacturers of everything from air barrier systems to Z-girts. Chris has lead remediation and research projects in all climate zones of North America and as far abroad as New Zealand.

RIA CERTIFICATION SCHOOL CANCELLATION POLICY
- Cancellations received less than 30 days prior to the Certification School start date or ONCE COURSE MATERIALS HAVE SHIPPED will not be granted a refund because course manuals are shipped 2-3 weeks prior to class dates.
- Cancellations must be made in writing and emailed to the RIA office. Phone calls are not accepted.
- Cancellations received 30 days prior to the Certification School start date will be granted a full refund minus a $100 administrative fee.
- Substitutions from the same company are accepted at least two weeks IN ADVANCE at no additional charge.
No-shows will not receive a refund.
