An Overview of the New RIA Forensics Guidelines

Presenters: Michael Pinto, Jeff Jones, Stephen Leung

Thursday, 06 April:  10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

In July 2016 the Restoration Industry Association released the first consensus document related to projects related to crime and trauma scenes, hoarder houses, meth labs, animal infestations, and projects involving infectious agent. The Guidelines for Professional Forensic Restoration were produced by the Forensic Restoration Committee of the Environmental Council. They are written for the contractor with easy-to-follow steps that describe isolation techniques, engineering controls, personal protective equipment, work procedures, waste disposal requirements, and post remediation testing. 

The presentation will be very different as it is built around a professional grade video case study of a unique forensic restoration project. The case study will help the presenters explain the four different risk levels that determine the specific steps that must be taken to safely complete such a project. With just a few minutes investment, attendees will see how the world of forensic restoration has now crossed to a new level of professionalism which puts contractor to offer such services in conformance with the guidelines head and shoulders above their competitors while leaving those who are doing such work "the old way" at risk of significant liability.

This will be a panel discussion with a moderator followed by a short Q&A. Individuals from 3 restoration companies representing different size and focus will speak to their unique challenges in marketing, servicing clients and managing their business. Aimed at providing insight into operating a successful restoration business and to provide tips and experience to those who may want to follow suit. Numbers that Tell Stories

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are metrics used to measure a specific activity or operation a company performs by comparing them to a predetermined benchmark or standard to indicate success or failure. The criteria used to measure success should be in alignment with the organizational goals of the company. Consequently, the monitoring of certain performance indicators is often relative to what is important to a company at a given point in time.


High End Furniture 101 with In-Class Demonstration

Sessions in your home make up what is defined as "contents". This includes your furniture, as well as all of the items that are in the drawers, cupboards, desks, closets, rooms and/or nooks and crannies of your home. In this session we will outline the nuances of high end furniture restoration - identifying characteristics and traits of high end furniture.  Following the basics and in classroom demonstration will be held highlighting the behind-the-scene of the different restoration techniques, including stripping and refinishing,  CDRR (Clean, Deodorize, Respray, and Rubout), and finally, simple touch-ups.



Guidance on the Removal and Disposal of Spray Polyurethane Foam Insulation

The use spray polyurethane foam (SPF) insulation is growing and with that growth comes the occasional need for product removal.  As a result there has been a guidance document created for the removal of SPF insulation.  The spray polyurethane foam (SPF) industry is actively seeking independent professionals to remove SPF insulation.  This need for SPF insulation removal can be a new revenue source for RIA Professionals.


Maximize Your Bottom Line, Benefits, & Strategies for Restoration Companies

Restoration Companies and Contractors are frequently faced with dilemmas on how to get paid for services rendered. This is especially true when there are indicators of long term damages in a home. There are various avenues restoration companies and contractors can take to maximize their bottom line, we are here to discuss the different tactics companies can use to recover funds they are owed for work they performed.

Best Practices for Infection Control

Infection control used to be a subject that only medical professionals were concerned about. With the emergence of a greater number of antibiotic resistant organisms infection control has moved from a specialty to a general concern. Increasingly, restoration contractors that want to work in medical facilities are being required to have specific training on infection control risk assessment (ICRA) procedures. However, best practices for ICRA are developing so rapidly that multiple documents should be reviewed to form a base of knowledge that is supplemented with specific information regarding emerging technologies. This presentation will offer information that summarizes the core aspects of ICRA practices as well as a range of helpful technologies from the simple to the sophisticated.


Building for the Future: An international perspective on what we need to learn for a promising future in Disaster Restoration

This panel will have consist of 10 industry leading experts of mixed generations and titles. The focus of this panel is on the changes the industry is experiencing and what actions are necessary to take in order to build for a bright future in Disaster Restoration. The theme of ‘Building for the future’ will expand on topics of meeting increasing demands and maximizing the customer experience, embracing the changes this industry is facing and the education necessary to continue building a successful business.


General Session: Six New Legal Points You Must Understand to Survive in 2017

This critical update of legal issues that impact restoration professionals will enhance the practice of all restoration professionals--from experienced veterans to millennials.  Ed Cross, "The Restoration Lawyer" will share new legal developments that will impact your legal and financial future.  Not all assignments of benefits are created equal.  Learn the differences between the assignments that help restorers get paid fast and those that give restorers a false sense of confidence.  What you don't know can hurt you!  In this presentation you will learn strategies and tactics for suing insurance companies directly for unpaid invoices, new regulatory actions being taken to impose discipline on restorers' contractor's licenses and ways to prevent them, the legalities of paying referral fees to plumbers, customer schemes to extract money from contractor's bonds, the anatomy of a restoration legal dispute and much more!

This will be a panel discussion with a moderator. 2 industry patriarchs will answer previously submitted questions in an attempt to share lost techniques and business practices, as well as a brief view of the current indusry from their perspective. Followed by a brief Q&A. Aimed at recapturing lost or diluted knowledge from industry patriarchs that we can apply for today’s environment. 

Tales from the Dark Side: 6 Things that Keep Insurers up at Night

Town Hall Meeting on the Future of the Water Damage Industry

 The past 2 years RIA has led an industry conversation on the growing divide between restorers and insurers. This divide has created a risk adverse and contentious marketplace which often pulls the policyholder and victims of disasters in the middle of the claims settlement process! Competing estimating and other software programs along with the the ever growing presence of "middlemen" handling the adjustment process on behalf of insurers further hampers a satisfactory resolution to water loss claims. Restorer's margins are shrinking while their administrative burden has skyrocketed as they try to satisfy the customer while maintaining a viable business.

This year the RIA 2017 convention will conclude with a member favorite Town Hall general session on the "Future of the Water Damage Restoration & Drying Industry". RIA Industry Adviser Pete Consigli will moderate a dynamic panel of well known industry personalities. Ken Larsen, Peter Crosa and Ed Cross will offer their insights on the state of the industry from the perspective of a restorer and trainer, independent insurance adjuster who is also the President of the NAIIA and legal and risk management expert.  Each panelist will share their insights and possible solutions to help RIA members "Make it Better" for their customers in the evolving restoration marketplace. An interactive Q&A session will be moderated between the panel and the members!
