Phoenix Award

Phoenix Award

Phoenix Award LogoSince the dawn of history, fires and floods have wreaked destruction on the homes, possessions, and lives of human beings. Even today, with all our modern advances, natural disasters still destroy our most precious possessions. The people who restore damaged property have a unique role in a setting of personal tragedy and stress; they strive to restore damaged property in the most effective way possible. Professional restorers respond to these crises every day, performing an essential human service. In order to recognize conspicuously high achievement in the area of disaster restoration, the Restoration Industry Association has established the RIA Phoenix Awards for Innovation in Restoration and Reconstruction. Phoenix Award recipients are announced at RIA's annual convention. In addition to earning the respect of fellow RIA members, this award provides a vehicle for winners, challengers and the entire RIA membership to achieve recognition in the media and in the insurance industry for their contributions.

Innovation in Restoration - Midwest Restoration Services

Just three hours before U.S. Cellular Field was opened to 40,000 fans on opening day, a fire broke out in a warehouse within the stadium under the right field stands and steps away from offices and locker rooms. Midwest Restoration Services was called and provided a solution which allowed game day to proceed on schedule, preventing the Chicago White Sox from cancelling and absorbing a huge revenue loss. The warehouse and adjacent areas had a strong smoke odor with soot everywhere and a wet dripping pile of burned merchandise on 20 foot high racks. The day’s job was to reopen the tunnel in front of the warehouse for vendor traffic, neutralize the odor, contain the spread of soot and begin the dry out process. For three months the crew used virtually every aspect of restoration cleaning to clean pallets of merchandise and other salvaged materials. The White Sox were able to complete the season with minimal interruptions and financial impact.

Innovation in Reconstruction – Charter Construction, Inc.

Charter Construction received a call from a homeowner, who was experiencing water intrusion in his home due to insufficient deck flashing. Valued at $8 million, the 7,200 square foot home was located on the remote Bainbridge Island and was in the middle of a real estate transaction. The scope of the project soon changed from deck repair to a complete roof reconstruction when additional rot was discovered Charter Construction also discovered that the roof was a Structural Insulated Panel—or SIPs—roof system that they had never dealt with before. In total, three structures on the property that needed complete roof replacement; including the main house and two carriage houses. Charter Construction was able to salvage the $8 million real estate transaction and deliver a well-constructed roof and deck for the new homeowner to enjoy for years to come.
