Family Finds Newly Purchased Home Contaminated With Meth

Ryan and Katie Barnes were forced out of their home in Port Orchard, Washington, due to meth contamination. They had the home tested for mold after their son kept getting sick, but the test came back positive for meth — at four times the legal limit. According to the Kitsap Public Health District, under state law, the Barnes family is responsible for the cleanup, and they must stay out of the home while they pay for a private company to fix it. It is not covered by insurance because it was a pre-existing condition. The family already has spent $20,000 on the cleanup, but more work needs to be done, and they are running out of money. Once the home is ready to be lived in, they will have to replace all of the contaminated furnishings. The health district originally gave the family 45 days to fix the problem or face fines of $500 per day. That deadline was extended indefinitely after the health district was contacted by KOMO news.
