9 Steps to Attracting, Bettering and Keeping Staff Members

The biggest business challenge is no longer attracting customers, but attracting new employees and retaining them once they have been trained. To attract and retain staff members, firms should start with creating a job description so they can advertise the position accurately. The job description should describe the position, the responsibilities, and the personal qualities being sought, which will save time by weeding out unqualified candidates. In a tight job market, they also should have a competitive compensation package, with the possibility of promotions or other future advancement. They should develop an interview process that quickly identifies good candidates and eliminates poor candidates from consideration, using standardized questions to make it easier to make comparisons. The job offer should highlight compensation, benefits, training, and expectations, keeping in mind that they are competing for good employees and that candidates are comparing their business to others. Once the job offer has been accepted, they need an efficient onboarding process to introduce new employees to the company, and they also should have a training process. Among other things, they should take a stair-step approach to help new employees grow in their roles; conduct performance reviews; and understand that staff retention is an ongoing task.
